Magazine Sales Scam
Sheriff A. A. "Tony Lippa asks all county residents to be aware of a
scam that has been operating in our area recently.
While no reports have been received in Caroline, neighboring counties have reported receiving complaints. The scam involves a company call Tuscan Reader Services. A google search of the internet will reveal literally hundreds of reports of fraudulent activity by this organization.
The scam usually begins with someone knocking on the victim's door. The salesperson may claim to be trying to earn points by selling magazines to go to college, or offering to send magazines to troops overseas.
The company. which claims to be based in Buford, Georgia, even provides the sales people with a phone number that the victim can call and make the sales person appear legitimate.
If you are approached by anyone claiming to represent this organization, do not allow them into your residence. Call your sheriff's office at (804) 633-5400 and alert us of their location and description.
Do NOT provide the sales person with any personal information or money. Many of the complaints across the country state the sales person looks poorly dressed or impoverished. Don't fall victim to this scam.
If you have questions, feel free to call our office or email us here.
